Dr. Srini Pillay trained as a physician in South Africa, graduating at the top of his medical school class before earning a Medical Research Council fellowship in neurochemistry. He completed his psychiatry residency at McLean Hospital through Harvard Medical School, where he became the most awarded resident in the institution’s history. He later directed both the Outpatient Anxiety Disorders Program and the Panic Disorders Research Program in Brain Imaging at McLean, and spent 17 years conducting federally funded brain research while serving as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Over time, his work moved beyond diagnosing and treating illness toward a deeper question: how do belief, attention, meaning, and emotion shape biology itself? That inquiry led him to pioneer psychogenic longevity, the science of how mindset influences healthspan and lifespan. His perspective challenges one cause explanations of disease and instead examines the constant dialogue between brain, body, and environment.
Today, Srini is Chief Medical Officer and Co Founder of Reulay, an AI driven digital therapeutics company delivering science based mindset shifts to improve well being. He also co founded MindForm Sanctuaries, which integrates neuroscience informed digital art into physical spaces to support emotional and physiological health.
What if reinventing yourself isn’t about becoming someone else—but expanding your understanding of who you already are?
In this episode of Mirror Talk: Soulful Conversations, Tobi sits down withDr. Srini Pillay, Harvard-trained psychiatrist, brain-imaging researcher, author, entrepreneur, and global voice in neuroscience, leadership, creativity, spirituality, and human potential.
Together, they explore what happens inside the brain when we live in survival mode, why relentless focus may actually limit creativity, and how belief, imagination, spirituality, and possibility-thinking can influence the way we experience ourselves and the world around us.
Dr. Pillay also reflects on his journey from South Africa to Harvard and shares what years of studying the brain have taught him about identity, fear, reinvention, and our capacity to move beyond perceived limitations.
In this conversation, we explore:
• What reinvention really means—and how to change without losing yourself
• What happens to the brain under chronic pressure, anxiety, and survival mode
• Why the brain needs both focus and unfocus
• How imagination, play, mind-wandering, and creativity support better thinking
• How our beliefs influence what we notice, attempt, and become
• The relationship between spirituality, mindset, healthspan, and longevity
• How to balance inner awareness with ambition, discipline, and hard work
• What neuroscience can teach us about possibility and human potential
• The opportunities and risks of AI and emerging technology
• How to recognize possibility when one chapter of life appears to be ending
One of the deeper invitations in this episode is simple: your present circumstances do not necessarily define the limits of your future.
Sometimes what feels like an ending may be the beginning of a very different way of seeing yourself.
