Five and a Half Years in a Shaolin Monastery

Recovery as Daily Discipline: How Shaolin training, yoga and breath work support rebuilding after addiction.

Maria Power, an addiction specialist doctor with more than 17 years' experience, explains recovery through the discipline that changed her own life after she shaved her head and spent five and a half years in a Shaolin monastery to atone. The conversation connects that discipline with the daily practices she still uses, including yoga, breath work and Shaolin training. She challenges the idea that recovery ends when substances stop, because her story puts repair, discipline and service after survival. Listeners leave with a practical picture of recovery as a daily practice, not a single decision.
