Executive Advisor on Leadership in Complex Organizations & Host of Messy with Daniel Atlin

Daniel Atlin works at the intersection of leadership, complexity, and sensemaking.
Over more than three decades in senior roles across Canada’s post-secondary, cooperative, and government sectors, he has worked alongside leaders navigating high stakes change: strategic plans, mergers, fundraising, and institutional transformation. His work was often in environments where authority is diffuse, priorities compete, and there are no clear answers.
That experience led to a central question that now anchors his work: Why does leadership so often look different in practice than it does in theory?
Through an Executive Master’s degree with Oxford Saïd Business School and HEC Paris, Daniel studied how university leaders make sense of complexity in real time. His research which was based on interviews with 25 university presidents across the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand continue to shape his work as a strategic advisor, executive coach, and educator. He has expanded that research into other complex, mission-based organizations such as hospitals, NGOs, and government agencies.
Today, Daniel helps leaders navigate what he calls the “messy” reality of leadership—where clarity is partial, systems are human, and progress depends as much on interpretation and judgment as it does on strategy.
Most organisations today are living with constant change, competing priorities and a good deal of uncertainty. The old leadership playbook was never built for that, and it shows.
Daniel's thirty-year-career has given him considerable experience and insight into the way complex organisations work, and the challenges senior leaders face when dealing with multiple stakeholders.
On the show we explore his own story, the sense of purpose that helped him navigate change in his career, and the model he has developed for making sense when the path is anything but clear.
During our conversation, you'll see how Daniel's work helps leaders and their teams see what is really going on beneath the surface, and gives them practical ways to respond with far more confidence.
