Most healthcare businesses don’t know where they’re losing patients – and it’s costing them more than they think

Patients drop off before booking. They book but don’t show. They attend once and never return. They leave quietly and never say why. Most healthcare businesses attribute this to price, competition, or marketing – but the real cause is often a trust failure they can’t see from the inside. Dale’s Patient Trust Audit was built to find exactly these failures: the consent form that raises more questions than it answers, the booking flow that feels transactional, the follow-up email that sounds like it was written by legal. He can talk about this from both sides – as someone who built trust frameworks inside HSBC and Schroders, and as a Stage IV cancer patient who has experienced firsthand what it feels like when a clinic’s communication doesn’t match the care behind it. For healthcare founders, clinic owners, and health-tech leaders, this is a conversation about turning an invisible problem into a measurable one.

Dale Atkinson is the founder of Clear Signal Partners, a healthcare consultancy that audits the patient experience from the outside in. His flagship methodology – the Patient Trust Audit – puts him through a client’s patient journey as a real prospective patient, with no insider knowledge, and reports back exactly where trust breaks down and what it’s costing them.

What makes Dale’s perspective unusual is where it comes from. He spent nearly two decades in compliance, governance, and financial crime across HSBC, Wellington Management, Schroders, and Deutsche Bank – chairing committees, running global teams, and building trust frameworks inside regulated institutions. In October 2024, he was diagnosed with Stage IV oesophageal cancer – inoperable, incurable, given less than a year. He found himself on the other side of a trust system, and the gaps were worse than anything he’d seen in financial services.

Since diagnosis, Dale has spent nearly half a million pounds navigating private healthcare alongside NHS treatment, building his own integrative protocol, and speaking to hundreds of patients with similar experiences. That combination – regulated governance professional, Stage IV cancer patient, and active private healthcare consumer – is the lens through which Clear Signal Partners operates. No one else is auditing healthcare trust from that intersection.
