Key topicsYouth programs need structure before passion becomes riskYouth workers, coaches and community program managers often care deeply about teenagers, but care alone does not make a program safe, repeatable or effective. Without curriculum, supervision, boundaries and facilitator training, youth development can depend too heavily on one person’s instincts. Merc can unpack what changes when resilience programs are designed as structured education rather than informal support. Listeners hear how to think about quality control, facilitator readiness and the difference between a good activity and a program that can be responsibly delivered to adolescents. A single charismatic coach cannot scale adolescent resilienceMany youth programs work because one exceptional coach holds the room, reads the teenagers well and knows when to push or pull back. That creates impact, but it also creates a scaling problem when the method lives only inside one person’s experience. Merc built CounterPunch with a facilitator pathway, course materials, supervision and an online learning system because adolescent resilience work needs to be teachable and quality controlled. She can also speak to piloting the program through her Master’s thesis and having it validated during a research institute trial, giving hosts a concrete conversation about moving from practitioner-led impact to replicable delivery. Schools miss the teens who are quietly disengagingSchool wellbeing teams often have pathways for students in obvious crisis, but the harder group can be the teenagers who are not causing major trouble and are not asking for help. They sit at the back, switch off, drift socially and slip through the cracks before their struggle becomes visible. This conversation gives educators and counsellors a prevention lens for adolescent resilience. Merc can speak to why ordinary adolescent stress deserves practical, early support before it turns into diagnosis, discipline or crisis response. View all topics →

Registered Psychologist, Founder and Boxing-Based Adolescent Resilience Coach

40+ years Working with young people25 Martial arts & boxing titles1,000+ Young people coached since 1987Since 2010 Registered psychologist

Mercedas Taaffe-Cooper is a registered psychologist, founder and boxing-based adolescent resilience coach who delivers physical activity-based resilience training for adolescents and trains facilitators to scale the program.

She moved from competitive kick-boxing and martial arts into coaching after a decade representing Ireland in kick-boxing and winning European and World titles; the gap she noticed was that young people needed practical, embodied skills for emotional regulation and connection rather than only talk-based interventions. That observation led her to develop a program that pairs combat-sport training with psychological skills teaching.

She brings over 35 years of presenting and coaching experience and formal academic credentials that include a BSc in Psychology, a first-class honours degree in Sports and Exercise Science, and a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tasmania; she became a registered psychologist in 2010. CounterPunch was piloted as part of her Master’s thesis, was validated by the Menzies Research Institute during its Northern Territory trial, and since founding CounterPunch Pty Ltd in Mt Barker, South Australia, she has run recurring teen groups and built a facilitator training pathway.

Day-to-day she combines sports and exercise science with clinical psychology to run CounterPunch teen groups, deliver CounterPunch Facilitator training via an evolving online learning management system, tender and partner with local sports institutes, and provide supervision and course materials for facilitators.
