Key topicsHigh achievers are not burning out because they cannot cope but because their lives lack meaningMaria-Elena explores why so many capable, outwardly successful people are not breaking down because they are weak or disorganised, but because they have built their lives around performance without ever being taught where meaning actually comes from. She brings a perspective that goes beyond surface-level burnout advice, drawing on psychology, mindfulness, and the neuroscience of fulfillment to show why productivity cannot substitute for inner steadiness. This conversation lands differently because she is not just asking how people can function better, but whether they are living in a way that the human nervous system was ever designed to find meaningful. A culture built on work as identity was always going to create more suffering than fulfillmentMaria-Elena can speak to one of the biggest modern tensions in a way that feels both deeply personal and socially relevant: many people have been taught to derive identity, worth, and meaning from work, then wonder why success still leaves them anxious, flat, or empty. She brings a compelling mix of neuroscience, psychology, and philosophical reflection to show why human beings are not wired to feel fulfilled through status alone, and why the loss of meaning in modern life is showing up as burnout, depression, and disconnection. This is especially timely for conversations around ambition, modern culture, and even AI, because she is not just reacting to change - she is asking what kind of inner life people need if work stops being the centre of who they are. Why relationships suffer when people do not understand the fears they bring into loveMaria-Elena discusses why many relationship problems are not just about communication breakdowns or poor compatibility, but about the private fears people bring into intimacy without recognising them. Fear of rejection, old attachment wounds, shame, self-protection, and the need for external validation all shape how people love, argue, withdraw, and pursue closeness. What makes her voice distinctive in this space is that she links relationship pain back to the broader human struggle with self-worth and suffering, giving hosts a conversation that feels psychologically sharp, emotionally honest, and much deeper than standard dating advice. Clinical Psychologist, Speaker and Pioneer in Psychedelic Therapy

28 years Clinical psychology experience1st cohort Psychedelic-assisted therapy clinicians in Australia2012 Doctorate in Clinical Psychology completedMeditation teacher Contemplative practice

Dr. Maria-Elena Lukeides is a Clinical Psychologist, meditation teacher, and one of the early practitioners working at the forefront of psychedelic-assisted therapy in Australia. Based in Sydney, she has spent nearly three decades in psychology, building a career that spans community mental health, adoption services, early psychosis intervention, private practice, and now one of the most closely watched emerging areas in mental health care.

Her interest in suffering was never purely academic. It began early, shaped by a difficult home life and her own experience of anxiety, depression, and feeling unseen. As a teenager, one validating encounter with a psychologist gave her a new way to understand herself and changed the direction of her life. From that point on, psychology was not just a profession she admired. It became the work she felt called to do.

That calling took her through years of frontline clinical work with trauma, severe mental illness, and complex emotional distress, and later into doctoral training in Clinical Psychology. Alongside that path, she found mindfulness and meditation during a period of personal upheaval, and that practice became more than an interest. It became something she leaned on when life was demanding more than she thought she could carry.

Today, Maria-Elena brings those worlds together.

About this episode

Lyn is joined by psychologistDr. Maria-Elena Lukeidesto examine the psychological undercurrents of intense romantic attraction. Drawing on decades of developmental attachment research and clinical practice, Dr. Lukeides unpacks how early childhood caregiving dynamics shape adult partnership choices, often driving people to mistake the familiar friction of past emotional wounds for true romantic sparks.

The discussion explores the push-and-pull between anxious and avoidant attachment styles, provides practical insight into breaking unconscious relationship cycles, and emphasises why identifying the exact dynamic you want day-to-day matters far more than obsessing over surface-level traits.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Attachment styles formed between infants and primary caregivers track longitudinally into adulthood, deeply shaping how individuals select and relate to romantic partners.

People with anxious attachment styles and avoidant attachment styles are routinely drawn to one another, sparking an intense cycle of mutual attraction followed by repulsion.

Intense "chemistry" is often an unconscious attempt to re-enact and resolve unmet emotional needs or unavailable dynamics experienced in childhood.

Choosing a healthy long-term partnership requires focusing on the daily operational dynamic of the relationship rather than relying solely on charismatic traits or reactive passions.

BEST MOMENTS

"It very much reminded me of what Freud would say about relationships, which is that we repeat to repair."

"If I think I'm the problem, then I'm the red flag—I'm just going to try and make myself green and work on myself, which means that I'm not actually constructing the boundaries."

"Even if you win... you're reinforcing that yes, it was your fault. So even mastery is a loss here."

"Love yourselves as if your life depends on it, because it does."
