Key topicsHe lost 16 years to a wrongful conviction but refused to lose the rest of his life to angerMost people hear Jeffrey Deskovic’s story and expect rage to be the defining emotion: a teenager wrongfully convicted of murder and rape, 16 years stolen, and an exoneration that came only after DNA proved what he had said all along. But Jeffrey shares a far more challenging lesson for audiences facing their own adversity: after one week of anger, he realised bitterness would only take more from him. Rather than allowing that injustice to define the rest of his life, he used his compensation, legal education, and lived experience to create The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice, which works to free innocent people and reform the laws that allow wrongful convictions to happen. This conversation gives listeners a rare look at resilience not as positivity, but as the daily discipline of turning pain into purpose and refusing to let injustice decide who you become. He Went Into Prison as a Wrongfully Convicted Teenager and Came Out to Become an Attorney Fighting the System That Failed HimJeff Deskovic was 17 when he was wrongfully convicted, and he lost 16 years of his life before DNA evidence proved his innocence. Most stories like this end at exoneration, but Jeff’s did not - he rebuilt from the ground up, earned his education, became a lawyer, and now works to free others trapped in the same system that once took his freedom. His journey gives audiences more than a wrongful conviction story; it shows what it takes to turn stolen time into purpose, legal knowledge, and practical reform. For true crime, justice, resilience, personal growth, legal, and human-interest podcasts, this is a powerful conversation about identity, reinvention, and becoming the person your younger self needed most. Wrongful Convictions Are Not Rare Accidents, They Are System Failures We Can PreventMost people think wrongful convictions happen because of one bad mistake, one bad officer, or one unlucky case, but Jeff Deskovic shows that they usually come from repeatable failures inside the justice system. Coerced False confessions, misidentification, lying informants, police misconduct, forensic fraud, prosecutorial misconduct, bad lawyering, junk science, and tunnel vision do not just ruin one life and dramatically impact the lives of family and friends, but also put the public at risk by leaving the actual perpetrator free to strike again, as happened in Jeff's case. Jeff speaks from the rare position of someone who has lived through those failures, studied them formally and writing a Masters Thesis on the topic, and as the founder of The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice, confronted these deficiencies as a lawyer working to free other innocent people whose wrongful convictions were caused by these deficiencies, as well as helped pass nine laws. He is actively working on additional policy changes in New York, Pennsylvania, and California. For true crime, legal, policy, public safety, civic, and social impact podcasts, this creates a conversation about how justice reform is not about being soft on crime- it is about building a system accurate enough to convict the guilty and protect the innocent. Statistics, case examples, the law before and after the passed policy changes, as well as ongoing policy reform efforts and other gaps in the justice system can be elaborated on in a simple, easy to understand manner. Steps that everyone can take to get involved will be laid out. View all topics →

From Wrongful Conviction to Justice Reform: The Attorney and Exoneree Helping Free the Innocent

16 years Wrongfully imprisoned before DNA exoneration15 people Helped free through the Deskovic Foundation9 laws Helped pass to prevent wrongful convictions200+ Articles authored on justice reform

Jeffrey Deskovic is a wrongful conviction expert, attorney, speaker, exoneree, and founder of The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice, where he works to free innocent people and change the laws that allow wrongful convictions to happen in the first place.

His mission is rooted in lived experience. Arrested as a teenager and wrongfully convicted at 17, Jeffrey spent 16 years in prison for a murder and rape he did not commit. He was finally exonerated in 2006 through DNA testing, after the actual perpetrator was identified. Rather than allowing that injustice to define the rest of his life, Jeffrey used his compensation, education, and hard-earned insight to build a foundation dedicated to exoneration, policy reform, and public education.

Since his release, Jeffrey has become one of the most credible voices in the wrongful conviction space. He earned a master’s degree in criminal justice, completed law school, was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2020, and now practices criminal defense while continuing to lead his foundation’s casework and reform efforts. His organization has helped free 15 people and supported nine legislative reforms designed to prevent future wrongful convictions.

Jeffrey’s work and story have also been featured on screen.
