The Trust Equation: Why Boards Hear Advice Only After Belief Adds Up

Building Trust Before Expertise in Governance: How board leaders earn belief so their advice is heard.

Sham Madhok starts with the trust equation, the idea that leaders have to build trust before their technical expertise will land. After 28 years in governance across healthcare, education and infrastructure, as a board director, board chair and committee chair, Sham has learned that expert advice goes unheard when the trust was never built first. Sham explains why credibility in the boardroom rests on stewardship and a long track record before any technical detail, and how leaders working across Canada, the UK and other markets can build that trust on purpose. Listeners leave with a practical order of operations: trust first, expertise second, decisions third.
