Detour — What a Scattered Career Picks Up Along the Way

Making Use of a Scattered Career: turning unrelated roles and forced moves into practical judgment

Daniel Atlin spent more than 30 years moving between a family record store, government, cooperatives, consulting, and university leadership before building his current work as an advisor, coach, and teacher. Most career advice treats that kind of path as something to explain away, when the moves people are forced into by disruption, or by a role that no longer fits, are usually where the useful judgment comes from. He shows how experience that looks unrelated on paper turns into a read on people, institutions, and timing that a straight climb never produces. He also names the harder part: the identity shift that lands when the old title goes and the new one has not arrived. Listeners leave able to describe their own zigzag as a qualification rather than an apology.

Daniel Atlin works at the intersection of leadership, complexity, and sensemaking.

Over more than three decades in senior roles across Canada’s post-secondary, cooperative, and government sectors, he has worked alongside leaders navigating high stakes change: strategic plans, mergers, fundraising, and institutional transformation. His work was often in environments where authority is diffuse, priorities compete, and there are no clear answers.

That experience led to a central question that now anchors his work: Why does leadership so often look different in practice than it does in theory?

Through an Executive Master’s degree with Oxford Saïd Business School and HEC Paris, Daniel studied how university leaders make sense of complexity in real time. His research which was based on interviews with 25 university presidents across the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand continue to shape his work as a strategic advisor, executive coach, and educator. He has expanded that research into other complex, mission-based organizations such as hospitals, NGOs, and government agencies.

Today, Daniel helps leaders navigate what he calls the “messy” reality of leadership—where clarity is partial, systems are human, and progress depends as much on interpretation and judgment as it does on strategy.
